 | HISTORIC U. S. HIGHWAY 666 POSTAL HISTORY |
Here are postal cancellations from post offices along U. S. Highway 666, now historic U. S. Highway 666. Route 666 has been given several names over the years including the "Coronado Trail", the "Devil's Highway", or the "Highway to Hell". Highway 666 was one of the original U. S. highways established in 1926. Historically it stretched from the U. S.-Mexico border at Douglas, Arizona, north through Willcox, AZ, Springerville, AZ, Gallup, NM, Cortez, CO, and ending at Monticello, UT. In 1992 the section of Highway 666 in Arizona was decommissioned and renumbered as U. S. Highway 191. The U. S. Highway 666 designation in New Mexico, Colorado and Utah was eliminated in 2003 and renumbered as U. S. Highway 491.
U. S. Highway 666 was fraught with controversy from its very beginning. It was standard for east-west running highways to have even numbers. However, Route 666 was a north-south trending road. Because of the significance of the number 666 to many Christian denominations as the Number of the Beast, traveling the route was troubling to many people. Also Highway 666 had an unusually high number of accidents, all manners of weirdness, haunting-type phenomenon, and just plain bad luck. Consquently highway officials were greatly pressured to renumber the highway.
The postmarks in this exhibit are on postally used envelopes and postcards and date from 1926, the year U. S. Highway 666 was established, to the present. They are listed in travel order along historic U. S. Highway 666 from Douglas, AZ to Monticello, UT.
This is a work in progress. I am continually searching for additional postmarks to add to this exhibit to show more variety and add additional post offices.
